51 Online Business Ideas for Female Entrepreneurs

If you’re an aspiring female entrepreneur looking for a way to break into business online, but you find yourself at a loss for ideas, this post is for you!

Sometimes just a little outside-the-box thinking can help you discover how to merge your interests and goals for online entrepreneurship. One method that helps the young, sassy, and smart female entrepreneurs that I collaborate with is to look at existing online business ideas to spark business concepts that might work for them.

I hope that the following 51 totally kick-a$$ online business ideas will prove to be helpful to you in the same way.

1.       Affiliate Marketing – Okay, this is not a new one. People all over the Web talk about the potential profitability of affiliate marketing. Hands down, becoming an affiliate marketer is one of the best and easiest ways to launch an online business. But here is what I would encourage you to consider if you want to operate in your sweet spot. First, don’t become an affiliate marketer if you hate selling. If you are an affiliate marketer, you’re a sales person and you better be good at it, which means you better like it. Second, market products and services that are linked to your passions. If you try to market products simply because they are popular, you won’t make the cut.

2.       Virtual Assistant – If you’re thinking there are too many VA’s out there to compete with think again. This is where the power of serving a clearly identified target market can give you a competitive advantage. For example, do you love working with creative types? Let’s say you’re an avid fiction reader and love fiction authors. Why not launch an online VA service for fiction writers?

3.       Niche Copywriting Services – Yes there are copywriters galore on the Web, but if you are passionate about all things baby and you have some kick-a$$ writing skills, why not become a copywriter for companies who sell all things baby-related?

4.       Niche Ghostwriting Services – Do you have a knack for a particular style of writing? Would you love to write in that style alone? Let’s say you’re an amazing persuasive writer (btw, if this is true be ready to be overwhelmed with work!). Offer a persuasive ghostwriting service for those who need help being a little more convincing.

5.       Graphic Design – Again the power of niches works in your favor. It seems there has been an explosion of “graphic designers” on the Web. So if you plan to succeed in this area online, serving a specific target audience is going to be your best friend. Now suppose you are obsessed with fashion and you have incredible graphic design skill. Why not try your hand at launching an online graphic design firm that specializes in graphic design for fashion designers?

6.      Web Design – Same concept as above but apply it to Web design.

7.      Online Beading Store – Do you love beading? Are you a beading wizard? Wouldn’t it be so cool to launch an online business that not only sold the coolest beads on the Web, but also offered video tutorials on beading methods and techniques? I think so, and I think I hear a cash register chiming!

8.       Online Custom Jewelry Store – When I was in college I was really into making jewelry, and I must confess I made some pretty incredible pieces. In fact, they became so popular amongst my friends that I started getting requests for custom designs. If only I knew then what I know now, and if only Etsy had existed! If you have a talent and passion for jewelry making this could be the online business for you.

9.       Vintage Clothing Store – Maybe you just have a passion for shopping? Girl, put that nose for clothes to good use. Raid your local Goodwill or Salvation Army for true vintage goods and turn around and sell them online. You can build your own store, or use an auction sites like eBay or Yahoo stores. Basically you’d be getting paid to shop, and if you’re a shopper that might be called heaven!

10.   Internet Research Firm – The Internet is amazing, but it can also lead to information overload. Countless hours can be wasted searching for quality information online. 17.   Online Video Editing Service- Sure, people can edit videos at home with their run-of-the-mill software, but it will look that way. Maybe you have a passion for videography? 20.   Online Flip Flop Shop – The idea here is to create a specialty store online. Is there something you just love, love, love and that you would love to sell? Create an online store based on a variety of one type of product and watch your sales soar.

High school students struggle terribly to come up with compelling essays when applying to college. And for some, their college essay can be a decision maker. If you love writing, and love people’s personal stories this could be a successful online business in the making!

22.   Small Business Market Researcher – Every small business needs market research, and most of them rarely make the time for it. Solve their problem and meet their need by using your research skills to build their business.

Great ideas – I am extremely good in the finance area and would love to assist people who don’t know how to budget – so the personal finance coach online seems perfect. I am hesitant though because if individuals are bent on spending more than they have, then what would make them change to use my advice or suggestions?

This is an awesome site, I have checked out many but this is the first to truly inspire me. I am a teacher and want to do something new. I am not highly motivated by making a lot of money, I am motivated by the purpose and mission of what I am doing. My passions are first, the environment. I am also passionate about education, and improving the status of women and children in developing countries. It seems nothing that motivates me translates into a profitable business. I now see some hope for making a good business that makes the world a better place as well, a socially responsible business. Thank you marlee

I can say that Affiliate Marketing works – you earn commission from selling for example their products. Ebay and Amazon have affiliate programs and you can try there. My friends have just started with THE TIME OWNER which is a great internet webpage that sell any days in history or future (for fun or for advertising, it’s up to the customer). I think it’s creative, new and fun internet site. Check it out here: http://www.thetimeowner.com/.

  13. Jason February 15, 2013 at 1:42 pm #

Ah #16 – Life Coaching :) It’s been a favorite of mine for a while. I think I’ve always been drawn to that route because we’re seeking insights into how to navigate the emotional path of life as it relates to our physical goals. I can see how women may be more in tune with Life Coaching for the mere fact that they (this is generally speaking) can be more emotionally driven than the vast majority of stoic guys out there.

i go through these ideas and i really want to do some online business but i am confuse what to do and how to start that.

  29. Jane Rodrigues June 21, 2012 at 5:48 pm #

Regarding #49: I thought about doing this as a business a year ago when I was laid off, but didn’t think there was a need for it, since everyone could create their own. I’d love to have my own photography business some day, but would love to create digital scrapbooks & photo albums for now.

How would I get started in something like this?

    49. Creating Digital Scrapbooks & Photo albums – Yeah people can do this a home on their PC, but can they do it with your flair for design and photography! Helping people capture the essence of memories, and enabling them to share those memories with ease is priceless for many people. That alone indicates that you could make a pretty penny sharing your added expertise.

    • Keep It Real! June 21, 2012 at 9:16 pm #

      Hi Jane,
That is pretty neat that you thought of the idea and now you see it here. Someone might be trying to tell you something! ;)

The first thing you need to do is find out whether or not there is an active market for the service. The easiest way to tell is to see if there are already people offering this type of service. If you see a healthy number of providers, you’re on the right track.

Then, you need to figure out who would buy this type of service.

Although you might think it would be the average joe, you might actually be better off targeting wedding, baby, or event photographers who put together books. Or, you might find that mom’s with kids leaving the nest are ripe to buy a product like this.

Google is a great tool for figuring that stuff out. If you do what is called “keyword research” on specific search terms it will tell how many people are searching for things like this services.

If you don’t know what keyword research is, Google that first, then do it. :)

The third thing you can do is look of groups of scrapbookers on facebook and in forums. See if you can find communities of people who like this stuff online and try to talk to them about whether or not they find a service like this worth buying.

Lastly, you’ll want to test your idea. You can do this by running some pay per click ads to see if people click through on a service offering like this. If they do…good sign. You can also make some business cards and start mentioning to friends, family, co-workers, and see if you can get them to let you do some of it for free. Then bring it to them and see how they respond. Do they love it? Would they have paid for it? If so, how much?

Then, try and sell some. If you can sell at least three. You’re money baby. It will be time to rock and roll.

This stuff is the subject of an online workshop I’m hosting next week, so if you want to learn more about developing a profitable product or service, you should check it out. Here’s the details: http://bit.ly/KGYytx

Thanks for your comment Jane. Hope that helps!

  30. Lee June 21, 2012 at 6:13 am #

A fantastic list shmole, the only thing i will say to anyone starting out is to keep things simply, take action and stick to it.

99% of people spend years wondering around the web aimless because they don’t know what route to take and everytime they hear a new idea they think it must be better than what they are currently doing.

  31. virginia June 2, 2012 at 2:19 pm #

Hi i had a question.. the economy is rough right now. I LOST MY JOB was laid off my edd ran out. Whats a internet or way to make side cash to start w very little money…thanks Virginia

    • Keep It Real! June 5, 2012 at 12:53 pm #

      Hi Virginia,
The best thing you can do if you have very little money or knowledge about Internet business is to freelance with sites like elance.com, guru.com, and odesk.com. You can go to these sites, fill out a profile, and start bidding for work right away. What you need to do is assess your skill set and decide what you are good at that people can pay you for in the various areas of work.

      Hope that helps! Good luck!

  32. Angela August 29, 2011 at 7:54 am #

Great list! Unfortunately I think a lot of people start these kinds of businesses without proper planning and without the understanding of how much commitment and determination is required. That said, I am a huge advocate of TRYING and continuing to strive to find a way to combine your passion with your career, and this list illustrates the huge range of possibilities out there for people.

  33. Melanie Kissell @SoloMompreneur March 21, 2011 at 2:25 pm #

Super list, Marlee — no stones unturned!

I see at least four good choices for me, but my top pick would be “Proofreading”. I excel (a.k.a. more like neurotic!) in the realm of spelling, punctuation, and grammar. I’ve always had a genuine love of language arts since the first grade.

For the past two years or so I’ve been “tossing out some bait” online and making many of my fans, friends, and followers aware of my proofreading skills and my desire to (seriously) make proofreading a work-from-home career. So far, no bites — no takers. I’ve put the word out to freelance writers, ghost writers, and copywriters in my circle of influence online. Once again, no bites — no interest whatsoever. No one seems to know ANYONE who’s in need of proofreading services.

Have any thoughts, suggestions, or direction, Marlee?

    Thank You.

    • Keep It Real! March 22, 2011 at 9:40 pm #

      Hi Melanie!
I’m glad you found the list useful. I think a great place for you to get your feet wet with proofreading services would be with freelance sites like elance.com, odesk.com, and guru.com. The beauty of those sites is that you can set up a profile and people searching for your skill will find you. I had a client grow an entire web design business using elance exclusively. The key to getting jobs on those sites lies in creating a winning profile that is detailed, as well as providing samples of your work. If you decide to try it out, I’d love your feedback.

I’m glad you mentioned it though. I’m going to be in the market for a proofreader (I’m terrible at it!), so I’ll know who to call on! ;)

      • Melanie Kissell @SoloMompreneur March 22, 2011 at 10:33 pm #

Thanks so much for your reply, Marlee — much appreciated! And, yes, when the day rolls around you’re in need of a proofreader, you’ll know where to find me. :)

The reason I’ve hesitated to create profiles on the sites you’ve mentioned is because I’ve noticed SO many people offering their services at these locations at below minimum wage — way below. I don’t mean to come across as smug or aloof, but I’m not in a position to work for $3/hour. However, it is very encouraging to hear about your client who grew a successful web design business via elance. If I decided to go this route, I’ll definitely let you know!

        Thanks again!

        Of course Melanie!

And don’t be discouraged by that. It’s well known by hiring parties that you get what you pay for! Low prices typically also guarantees very low quality work. There are a number of freelancers with US market rate prices that do very well. Jump in!

Wow, there are a lot of really good ideas here. The best one is Online Poker Coach. I want that one. :) Seriously, I’ve had quite a bit of success with Direct Sales offline. I’m looking to try my hand at doing a bit online too.

Many advocates of the industry are afraid that loan sharks will get
their business. All that you need to at present is
just fill an online application form with your correct details like your address proof,
contact number, ID proof, bank account, employment letter, and
so on. Surf over the Internet to find out the lenders of the direct
      payday loans.

Do you mind if I quote a couple of your posts as long as I provide credit and sources back to your
webpage? My blog is in the exact same area of interest as yours and
my users would truly benefit from a lot of the
information you present here. Please let me know if this
      okay with you. Thank you!

Incredible ideas! Hands down this is one of the most creative AND realistic list I’ve seen yet. Thanks from us uncreative types. ;)

    Holy shmole!

This list must have taken you a fortnight to come up with. Just a word of advice to anyone looking to start an online business. Remember to keep it simple!

It doesn’t matter what kind of business you want to start. If you don’t have people going to your site, and you’re not able to convince them of the awesomeness of your product/service or other people’s product/service then you won’t make money!

    • Keep It Real! December 7, 2010 at 2:02 pm #

LOL! It did take awhile Ryan. Great advice you share. Thanks for stopping by!

  41. Kate October 7, 2010 at 3:35 pm #

I totally love these ideas. Sure you’re not going to track us down and ask for some of the profits once we’re successful? ;) There’s some good stuff here, definitely things I can/could/would do!

    • Keep It Real! October 7, 2010 at 3:39 pm #

LOL! Thanks Kate! You totally should explore the possibility present in some of these ideas. Just start small – you could even launch something right off of Exotic Donkey Meat. Which, btw, I think the “delicate flower”/ Mike Tyson t-shirt is a new fav for me. Keep it coming! :)

  42. Steven H October 6, 2010 at 5:27 pm #

As a male I could definitely steal some of these ideas too, right? :P

    • Keep It Real! October 6, 2010 at 5:33 pm #

Of course you can Steven! In fact, I think an online knitting club is totally up your alley! ;)
