The other day I was asked, “Why do you do what you do?” And until I had been asked the question, I thought I was crystal clear on the answer. Ironically, I took me nearly 20 minutes to explain myself, and by the end of the explanation all I had disclosed was how I got to where I am today – not WHY I do what I do.
That understanding didn’t come to me for another hour, and a full night’s worth of rest. It wasn’t until the next morning that I realized the significance and power of the question.
Why Do You Do What You Do?
Almost everyone is searching for meaning in their lives. Whether or not you are aware of it, most of your life you are asking yourself the question, “what on earth am I here for?” And depending on who you are, the question may be presented to you in a different shape. But at the end of the day we are all seeking something more from our existence. On some level, we are all seeking purpose.
Take yourself for example. As an entrepreneur or future entrepreneur, in all likelihood you have an intrinsic desire to do something “bigger” with your life, so you’ve found yourselves on this path towards building a business and becoming self-employed. It’s the belief that you were meant for something greater, and your unrelenting desire to chart your own course that drives you.
And although there are exceptions, I’ve yet to meet a genuine and ethical entrepreneur who has said they wanted to start their own business so that they could live in lack, make as little impact in their world as possible, or take advantage of others as much as possible.
Instead, I believe becoming self-employed is much more about bringing what you have to offer to the world for good and for profit. It’s about doing what you were meant to do, so that the work you do has meaning to yourself and to others.
I mean if the work you did in the corporate world had meaning, and brought you closer to your purpose you’d never want to leave it, would you? If the work you did allowed you to use your greatest gifts, brilliant talents, and strongest skills, you’d know you were doing the kind of work that you were meant to do in this world, wouldn’t you?
And if you were doing those things in the way that only you can do them, you’d probably feel very much like the person you were created to be, right? I think you could even say that you’d be on the path towards your own personal greatness. I think you would know that your life had true meaning.
The Importance of Meaning
Let’s talk about meaningfulness for a moment. Meaningfulness always has to do with “others.” You will never find meaningfulness in serving yourself alone. You may find temporary happiness in doing something that makes you feel good, but it’s in doing things for others that you’ll find your deepest sense of satisfaction. Just think about what it feels like to give a gift to someone you love. It’s in giving that you receive the joy. People who lead self-serving lives inevitably end up miserable, or alone, or both.
So if you want your journey as an entrepreneur to help you fulfill your purpose, your business must have meaning. It must be about serving others for good and for profit. It must be about assessing your gifts, talents, and skills so that you know what you were created to do and who you were created to serve.
And it’s from that place that you will start to understand the why behind what you do.
You see I believe that our ability to dream, our desire for greatness, and our need to do something bigger than ourselves is something given to us by our Creator so that we can manifest our purpose.
When we are children, we have this innate ability to believe ANYTHING about our reality. We could become superheroes, professionals, wizards, or whatever the mind could conceive at any given moment. And we could be fully convinced of that reality regardless of what others tried to tell us.
But as you know, as we experience the world, our ability to believe in ourselves SO fearlessly diminishes. And as a result, we start to lose sight of our purpose – to know our Creator.
Now if you’ve stuck around for this long, you’re probably asking, “What the heck does knowing “my Creator” have to do with becoming self-employed or starting a business anyway?”
Well, I’m so glad you asked.
If you have an overwhelming desire in your heart to start your own business and pursue entrepreneurship, don’t ignore it. If you’ve assessed your gifts, skills, and talents and have discovered that you want to serve others with those gifts for good and for profit – do it. It’s there for a reason, and in all likelihood it’s been put there by your Creator.
When you answer the call in your heart and commit to becoming the person you were designed to be, you will not only discover what you are made of, but you’ll also come to know who you’re made by.
I know I don’t have to tell you that building a business is no easy task, and if you think it will be, let me correct the record now – it’s not! But if that is what you were meant to do, the failures, the victories, the obstacles, and the opportunities that you will experience throughout the journey will introduce you to your true purpose.
You see, that is the reason that I do what I do. I want to empower others to bring their dreams of entrepreneurship to reality so that through the process they can come to know their true purpose. And I want this for others because I was given a burning desire to build my own business, to serve others through it, and to turn my dreams into a reality. And through this process I have come to know my Creator – my true purpose, more and more.
And what I’ve found is that to know Him is to love Him, and to love Him is to love others, and to love others is to serve them, and when I serve others with my gifts, skills, and talents, together we profit beyond that which is in our bank accounts. And that is why I do what I do.
If you have a desire – from the depths of who you are – to build your own business and become self-employed, now is the time. That desire for more out of your life isn’t a fluke. It’s God-given. It’s there for you to use so that you can serve others for good and for profit. It’s there to give you meaning. It’s there for you, through the process, to come to truly know Him and all that comes with knowing Him. And then, you’ll truly have fulfilled your purpose.
You only need to ask yourself one thing: Why do you do what you do?
Come on! What are you waiting for – your Creator is waiting.

It’s very inspiring! I’ve felt your intentions with your words. It’s really tough to find ways to achieve desired goals and be able to know what’s best to stay on track. So true, self-realization will always be the a big after in the end.
Thanks, Kelly! I’m glad you enjoyed it. I appreciate your feedback.
What a wonderful post. When I created a vision for my business a ew years ago, i was able to strive in whatever i was doing to accomplish my goal. I knew that my life, kids and some many other i can help depends on my success. Being successful in what i do gives other permission to go accomplish what they desire.
This is very much to the key to all success. I make it a habit to read my vision every day.
Thanks for sharing
Thank you for sharing, Joyce. It’s so important to keep your vision in front of you. What a great practice!
Not to diminish your other posts, but, this is probably one of your best, and I can tell it came from your heart.
Not at all, Chas. I totally agree, and you are totally right. It’s straight from the heart. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts.
Nice post, nice blog, thank you for sharing…
Love this, Marlee! When you get really clear on why you’re doing what you’re doing it’s like rocket fuel for your creativity, inspiration and drive. Suddenly your why is pulling you forward rather than you having to push or force anything and the most delightful, yet unexpected, synchronicities begin to occur. It can feel almost magical. ; )
Yes, Lisa! I KNOW exactly what you mean.
The article is packed with great information and very interesting. A food for thought for everybody. I have a bad experience in life and really so hard to forget it. Doing all thing to be done and making sure that it can make you lift up. Thanks for sharing this one.
Thanks for the wonderful article Marlee. You hit the nail on the head. It is something that is easier to feel than describe for sure. I believe we all have an ability to achieve greatness in all we do. We just need to make it so regardless of what the situations around us are. To go through life without a purpose is to not really live.
Thanks, Jose. I share in your sentiments completely! Thanks for stopping by.
