One of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to online business training is how some teachers want you to believe that you can purchase and follow a step-by-step blueprint to build a successful business.
And if it’s not a blueprint, it’s a system, and if it’s not a system, then it’s a success kit.
And I get it. It’s marketing. Marketing is my thing.
But the bottom line is as much as I tell you there is no such thing a system, blueprint, or perfect little kit for building a successful business, you don’t want to hear that.
No one wants to buy hard, uncertain, and time-consuming. But that is a BIG part of what comes with building your own profitable business.
And that is why those systems, blueprints, and kits sell. Because we all want there to be a magic piece of the puzzle that will make everything work like we’ve seen it work for others.
We want it to be that easy, but it’s not.
The Ugly Truth about Blueprints, System, and Success Kits
Those blueprints, systems, and success kits are not reality. They are not the complete truth.
I’m about telling the truth.
And the truth is your journey; your business, your gifts, and your calling are all unique to you.
And because they are unique to you, someone else’s blueprint will never work for your business.
Someone else’s success will never look and unfold exactly like yours will.
And here’s another truth.
If you really want a successful business, one that honors God, the people you serve, and makes a profit, you can’t do exactly what someone else has done, because then you will be just another version of them.
And a copy is never a good as the original.
A knock-off is never as valuable as an authentic creation.
People don’t want to pay good money for something that is a replica of something else.
People only pay good money for things that can’t get anywhere else.
So if you buy into the promises of systems, blueprints, and kits, only to find that they are not working for you (or working like you expected they would), you shouldn’t feel like a failure.
You shouldn’t think that business just can’t work for you.
You just have to take those resources for what they are.
And at their best, those systems, blueprints, and kits are maps that show you the lay of the land.
Some top-quality programs can give you exceptional insight on the tools you can use, the strategies you should try, and the tactics to apply (I’ve bought and learned from many of them), but they will never serve as a step-by-step guide to creating the business that God has called you to create.
I believe that certain systems, blueprints, and kits are incredible resources for seeing how things can work together in your business. I think they can help you cut your learning curve in half (or more in some cases).
I think they can fill in the blanks where your experience and expertise are lacking. I gladly and highly recommend programs that I know are valuable and timeless. Those are programs you should buy.
Just remember…
Systems, blueprints, and kits will only help you figure out what kind of business you want to build and how to use the tools, but how you build that business is completely up to you and the God who leads you.
That is the truth.
You can take it or leave it. But if you want to take it, if you want to build a profitable business that matters beyond the money it makes, I’ve got something for you.
You Need Principles Not Programs
Over the next nine weeks I’m going to share nine principles you need to understand to build a profitable business that isn’t based on someone else’s system.
Nine principles that will help you build a business that is unique, extraordinary, and extremely profitable.
Nine principles that will give you the clarity you need to apply your God-given talents, skills, and interest to a business that exists for good and for profit.
If you’re ready to trust God, work hard, learn well, and apply what you learn consistently, then you’re ready for the 9P’s of Profit.
What are the 9 P’s of Profit?
The best way I can describe the 9 P’s of profit is by looking at a wheel. Imagine that your business is this wheel. And as the wheel moves round and round your business gains momentum, grows and makes money. But, if your wheel is missing several spokes or worse yet, its hub, it can’t function properly. It can’t get the momentum it needs to run smoothly. It won’t run consistently. And, it will be a bumpy ride.
For your business to grow, serve others well, and make money it has to have its hub and spokes in place. So, let’s take a look at the different components of what your wheel should look like.
Our wheel (business) is made up of 1 hub and 8 spokes for a total of 9 Ps (or principles).
In our hub, we have our first P, which is perspective.
Next, we have our 8 spokes which are:
- petition
- passion
- purpose
- profit
- position
- proposition
- promotion
- pattern
Each one of these 9 Ps (principles) are meant to work together to create a wheel (your business) that is fully functional. When any one of them is missing you simply won’t have what you need to build a business that works.
Next week we are going to dig deeper into these P’s. And over the course of this series, I will break each of these principles down and teach you not only what they mean, but how you can apply them to your business.
Your True Success Starts Here
I’d like to close this post with one imperative and parting thought.
I want you to make a commitment to yourself. I’d like you to promise yourself that you aren’t just going to read this series, consume this information, and feel smarter.
I want you to promise yourself that you will consume this information, and do what you need to do to bring your God-given desire for entrepreneurship into reality.
I want you to realize that you (and your business) are worth putting the time and effort into implementing the information you learn.
Be a doer and take action, because you are the only person who can take the steps you must take to live out your personal greatness.
Don’t you think you deserve it?!
Whatever you’re going to achieve in this life all starts with what you believe.
Jesus said “I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it [a]overflows).”
You were created to enjoy your life – to have it in abundance. Do you believe it?
Make the decision to establish this kind of mindset. A mindset that says, “You can do this, you can succeed, and you can live an abundant life.”
Start there, and join me next week as we take a look at our first P, our hub, which is perspective.
And, if you are going to join me, I would love to know it. Simply leave me a comment with the words “I’m in!” Make a public declaration of your future success, and I’ll be here to cheer you along every step of the way.
P.S. If you are in the “thinking” stages of starting your own business, and aren’t sure what skills or interests you could leverage to start a business, please check out my free e-course Find Your Sweet Spot. This e-course was created to help you figure out how your strengths, skills, and interest can work together to build a business that pay the bills and brings glory to God.

Man, you’ve nailed it here.
I think we can find the same parallels in so many other things: time management, weight loss, parenting, etc.
People are looking for an easy, thoughtless blueprint that will take them to their desired end with the least amount of energy. But life doesn’t work like that. It takes thought and it takes hustle.
Loren PinilisMaybe Your Boss Isn’t the Enemy
Absolutely, Loren. No one likes to be told results come about by hard work, but the sooner you embrace the sooner you get the results you want!
I agree, A system or formula does not work for everyone. I think some times people think a system would allow them to sit back and collect the money. But to be successful no matter if you use a system or not requires hard work.
I’m looking forward to reading your series over the next 9 weeks. Keep rocking it.
Thanks, Dan!
I forgot who said it, but they said: when people buy a system that is flawed and it doesn’t work, they never blame the instructors they always blame themselves. As I was writing this it came back to me…it was Ramit Sethi. This was a great post Marlee!
